3 Face Masks For Winter Skin

Say goodbye to winter skin blues.

The change in seasons and subsequent drop in temperatures can wreak havoc on skin. When the air cools skin can be left dry and out of balance. To combat the chaos, I have  three face masks that I rely on to keep skin glowing and smooth—sans pimples, dry patches, or flakey skin.

1. Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask

This mask is packed with rejuvenating skin benefits and can be used year round, but is especially great when the weather turns harsh. It’s gentle enough for sensitive skin and provides much-needed hydration that soothes irritation while detoxifying impurities. I like to use a very thin layer before bed. After rinsing it off in the morning my skin is much softer and smoother.

2. Origins Original Skin Retexturizing Mask

While not as gentle as the previous formula, this mask is like a reset button for skin. I like to use it when I am in need of some serious renewal. I typically use it once every couple weeks, and try not to overuse it as it can be more drying. However, it’s great for diminishing pores and restoring clarity, leaving skin glowing. And because it only takes 10 minutes, it’s easy to fit into a busy schedule.

3. Proactiv Skin Purifying Mask

This mask is my holy grail product when it comes to spot-treating blemishes. While it can be used on the entire face, I prefer to apply it before bed onto any stubborn spots I may have. When I wake up in the morning I rinse the entreatment off and pimples are substantially smaller and less noticeable. It’s powerful, yet gentle enough to be used nightly and has never irritated my sensitive skin, which is often hard to come by.

DIY Brush Cleaning

Lather, rinse, repeat.

brush-makeup-make-up-brushesBrush cleaning is one of those ugly facts of life. No one ever enjoys doing it, however it is such an important aspect of makeup application. Oil, dirt, and bacteria build up over time and settle into brush bristles. This can then transfer to your skin as you apply your makeup. Skin can then be left irritated, with the gunk often leading to clogged pores and potential breakouts. Long story short, dirty brushes equals a dirty face.

Even though it is crucial to keep brushes clean, it can be a tedious task to accomplish. Additionally, it can be difficult to know what products to use if there’s no brush cleaner or shampoo available.

Below are some easy steps to follow to help ensure your brushes—and skin—stay clear.

Step 1: Lather

If you don’t have brush shampoo you can easily make your own with common products found around the house. A great option is to dilute some dish soap with water. This way it will still cut through the gunk left in the brushes, without being overly harsh.

Step 2: Rinse

After you’ve mixed your the soapy solution, dampen brushes under water and dip them into the mixture. Work the soap into the brush head using your fingers, taking care to squeeze out all the leftover makeup. If you are looking to splurge on some serious cleaning equipment, consider get a brush mat. (The mats are placed in the sink and allow you to clean brushes more thoroughly.) After you have rinsed out all the soap, check to see if the water you wring out is clear. That’s how you’ll know whether it’s completely clean.

Step 3: Repeat

If brushes are particularly clogged up, you may need to repeat the lathering process more than once. This is especially true for brushes that are used for foundation or other cream products, as that can be more difficult to clean. Continue repeating these steps until there is no makeup left.

Step 4: Dry

After you have fully cleaned your brushes, it is time for them to dry. First, squeeze out any excess water onto a clean paper towel. Then reshape the bristle to ensure they dry in the correct shape. Finally, lay brushes out on a flat surface and allow to dry. Another option is to pick up a drying rack made specifically for brushes. It helps ensure no water accumulates at the head of the brush, potentially damaging bristles. It also helps to clean brushes in the evening and leave them to dry overnight.

5 Products for a 5 Minute Face

Get back to the grind in no time.

As much as I wish I were a get-up-and-go kind of girl, getting ready quickly is a super power I do not posses. It also doesn’t help that I am the opposite of a morning person, a combination that results in many “Sorry, I’m running late!” text messages.

I would always prefer to have endless hours set aside to primp for the day, but as a full-time student that is not practical, nor possible with my hectic schedule. I often find myself rushing out the door to make it to classes across campus, so having staple products I can count on is a must.

When I am in a rush, I know that I can always rely on these items to help me look polished and put-together in no time at all.

1. BECCA Under Eye Brightening Corrector

No matter how little sleep I got the night before, this corrector diminishes dark circles in a flash and immediately livens my entire look. Apply under concealer to mask imperfections and create a smooth base.

2. Tarte Shape Tape Contour Concealer

This product makes my list for the sole reason of just how FULL coverage it is. It hides dark circles, blemishes and redness with ease so it is the perfect all-in-one concealer for mornings when you don’t want to mess with multiple products.

3. MAC Cosmetics Mineralize Skinfinsh Natural

This has been my favorite setting powder for months due to it’s ability to set my face with absolutely no cakey finish. Seriously, it’s amazing. The added coverage it gives is perfect for days when I don’t have time for a full face of foundation, but still want to look put-together.

4. Maybelline Volum’ Express The Rocket Mascara

I have been a die hard fan of this product for years and it continues to remain my staple mascara. I use the waterproof formula to help ensure my lashes stay curled and voluminous all day long.

5. Too Faced Pink Leopard Blushing Bronzer

This is the perfect dual product for days when you are short on time. The golden bronzer is a great pick-me-up for tired skin while the added pink shimmer looks beautiful on the cheeks and livens any look with a healthy glow.

My Favorite Products For Glowing Skin

Get your glow on, girl.

Finding the right skin care regimen can be incredibly difficult, time-consuming, and not to mention frustrating. I am constantly on the hunt for products that will keep my skin clear, smooth, and oil-free. I have spent years trying to find the best products to suite my combination-oily skin, which also gets frequent dry patches during the colder months. It can be a challenge to know what products will actually make a difference and which one’s won’t live up to their hype. Below is my current skin care routine, with the products I am loving right now. While these items have worked for me, each person’s skin is different so be sure to consult a dermatologist if you have any negative results.

I cleanse my skin morning and night, which is essential for removing pore-clogging dirt and bacteria. My favorite staple cleanser is by Aveeno, because it leaves my skin clean without feeling too harsh.

Toner is a great way to ensure every last trace of makeup and oil is gone. I use it after cleansing my skin by sweeping a dampened cotton pad all over my face. I am obsessed with Pixi By Petra, and have seen a real change in my skin after incorporating it into my routine.

Another staple product I use in my nighttime routine is this serum, which is also from the Pixi line . I think using them together works the best, and really helps fade any discoloration I have and leaves my skin glowing.

When skin is dry it can actually overproduce oil. This can cause combo to oily skin to get even shinier. A lightweight moisturizer is key to keeping my skin in balance. My favorite is from Murad and is perfect for use morning and night.
